Oral Pathology & Microbiology
The specialty of Oral Pathology & Microbiology is a convergence of basic sciences and clinical dentistry. As in depth knowledge of this subject provides a foundation for understanding and diagnosis of head and neck diseases. The purpose of the department includes teaching of basic subjects which provide an insight into the structure forming the normal oral cavity as well as pathological state. Both Undergraduate and Postgraduate curriculum are effectively run in the department. The undergraduate course deals with applied aspects of theoretical knowledge. The postgraduate course deals with microscopic examination with diagnosis of wide range of diseases of oral and maxillofacial region. The department deals with processing of biopsy tissues received from various departments to prepare a histolorical section which can be viewed under a microscope so as to reach to a definitive diagnosis.It undergoes various steps like Fixation, tissue processing, embedding, section cutting using Microtome, staining with routine and special stains and microscopic examination of the slides.Preparation of cytological smears and staining them with routine and special stains to be viewed under a microscope to rule out an impression which aids in the diagnosis are also carried out. The department has a state-of-the-art infrastructure to carry out histopathological, histochemical studies. Microbiological Assay consisting of Grams staining and Acid fast bacilli
